The Story of Riga's Black Cat: When Stubbornness Becomes a Legend
If you walk through the streets of Old Riga and look up, you will notice two black cats perched on the turrets of a building right across from the Great Guild. These are no ordinary cats – they are symbols of local grit and a very specific sense of humor.
Legend has it that once upon a time, there lived a very wealthy Latvian merchant. He desperately wanted to join the Great Guild, but the German elite refused him membership. Insulted by this injustice, the merchant decided to have the last laugh.
He placed two metal cats on the roof of his house and turned them so their tails were pointed directly toward the windows of the Great Guild. Imagine the faces of the prestigious gentlemen who had to look at that "view" every single morning! After lengthy legal battles, the cats were eventually turned around, but the story of the merchant’s defiance lived on. Today, the Black Cat is a symbol of luck and character. If you see a black cat in Riga, don’t worry – it’s just guarding its own truth!
