Saint Catherine's Day – November 25th – Honoring the Mistress and the Wool
In the Latvian tradition, Catherine's Day is dedicated to the women of the household. As outdoor work ceases, life moves indoors to the warmth of the hearth. Special attention is given to the sheep, asking for thick wool and good health. On this day, women participated in masked processions, dressing in white and visiting neighboring farms to bring blessings. It marks the beginning of long winter evenings filled with spinning and handicraft.
Traditional beliefs:
Winter Omen: If it rains on Catherine's Day, expect thaws and mud until Christmas.
Frost: If it freezes on this day, expect a very cold December and St. Andrew's Day.
Wool Magic: Spinning or sewing was forbidden on this day to ensure that the sheep's wool remained soft and the animals stayed healthy.
