Labrencis Day – August 10th – Fire Day and Rye Harvest

Labrencis Day, or Fire Day, is a turning point in farm life. By this day, haymaking had to be finished, and rye harvesting began. Fire held a special, magical significance on this day – it was believed that burning stubble on Labrencis Day scared away pests and brought a blessing for the next harvest. Mistresses of the house served bread baked from new rye and the first meal from the new grain. This was a day both to honor and to beware of fire.

Traditional beliefs:

  • Fire Magic: On Labrencis Day, lighting a fire indoors was forbidden to avoid inviting a house fire. Bonfires were lit only outside in the fields.

  • Rye Harvest: Rye harvested on Labrencis Day is said to be high quality, and the bread baked from it will be delicious.

  • Wind Forecast: If the wind blows from the north on Labrencis Day, expect a lovely and dry autumn.labrencadiena1.jpg
