Mara’s Day – March 25th (Spring Mara)
As the March days grow noticeably warmer, we celebrate Mara’s Day (Māras diena). In ancient Latvian tradition, this is one of the four most important "Mara days" of the year. It marks the moment when Mother Earth truly awakens and begins to bestow her blessing upon all living things.
Women’s Strength and Beauty Mara’s Day is a celebration of femininity. For women, it was crucial to rest and adorn themselves on this day. Tradition held that one should not spin, sew, or knit—instead, time should be given to oneself and to nature. If a woman is joyful and beautiful on Mara’s Day, her entire household will thrive and bloom throughout the year.
Folk Beliefs for Nature Observers:
Night Frost: If there is a frost on the night of Mara’s Day, expect forty more nights of frost to follow.
The Wind: Whichever way the wind blows on Mara’s Day, it will mostly continue to blow from that direction until Midsummer.
Returning Birds: If migratory birds return around this time, a productive summer and a rich autumn are expected.
Mara’s Day reminds us of the balance between gentleness and strength. It’s the perfect moment to pamper yourself and the women in your life, enjoying a delicious moment with the power of "Sweet Amber" while honoring the fertility of the earth.
