February 2nd – Candlemas. A Festival of Light and Joy

As the February sun begins to shine a bit brighter, Candlemas (Sveču diena) arrives. For ancient Latvians, this was a special time—the deep midwinter was behind them, and the first whispers of spring began to stir in their hearts. This day is about the light we can create ourselves and share with others.

The Magic of Candle Making The main tradition of this day was, of course, pouring candles. It was believed that candles made on Candlemas burn the longest and brightest. They protected the home from misfortune and brought blessings. But most importantly—on this day, you had to laugh a lot! Laughing on Candlemas ensured that the entire coming year would be joyful, light, and successful.

Folk Beliefs for Nature Observers:

  • Watch the sun: If the sun shines on Candlemas long enough for a man to hop onto a horse, the coming summer will be beautiful.

  • Frost and snow: If there is a hard frost on this day, spring will be early and warm. But if there’s a blizzard—spring will be late.

  • Laugh from the heart: The more you smile and rejoice today, the more happiness you will attract into your daily life.

Candlemas reminds us that even in the coldest times, there is a small flame within each of us that can provide warmth. It’s the perfect moment to light a candle, place a bowl of "Sweet Amber" treasures nearby, and feel the light returning to your home and heart.
