Amber – The Tear of the Sun and a Global Treasure

Did You Know? Amber is not a stone. It is fossilized tree resin that formed approximately 40–50 million years ago. In vast coniferous forests, as the climate warmed, trees secreted resin that flowed down the trunks, trapping air bubbles, plant particles, and even insects (inclusions). Rivers washed this hardened resin into the sea, where it spent millions of years under sediment, eventually becoming the "Sun Stone."

A World of Colors: From Baltic White to African Black In nature, amber is found in over 250 shades, and its color depends on the environment where it rested:

  • Baltic Amber: The classic honey-yellow and the rare, precious white or "bone" amber, which contains millions of microscopic air bubbles.

  • Exotic Africa and Madagascar: Here, you can find much younger amber, often in very dark, even black tones. It gained its black color from ancient ash and minerals.

  • Marsh Amber: Found in the regions of Syria and Lebanon. It formed 130 million years ago in acidic, moist environments without oxygen, acquiring saturated smoky grey or deep brown tones.

  • The Magic of Temperature: Color also changes in the hands of a craftsman. By heating amber at high temperatures, light shades gradually transform into cherry red and even deep black, without losing its natural value.

Ancient Beliefs and Health Our ancestors believed that amber was a source of life energy. It was worn as a talisman against the "evil eye," and infants were given amber beads to chew on to ease teething. Science explains this through succinic acid – a natural biostimulator found in every piece of amber that has a beneficial effect on the body.

How to Recognize Genuine Amber? At home, raw amber can be tested in a saltwater test (it floats in very salty water) or by rubbing it against wool (it will attract small pieces of paper and smell of resin). Important: If amber is set in jewelry, polished, or heated, old-fashioned methods (like the saltwater test) no longer work because the density changes during processing. In these cases, it is best to trust an experienced craftsman.
